Arlington, TX HistoryNamed for Robert E. Lee’s hometown in Virginia, Arlington, Texas was a frontier for Native Americans before European exploration in the early days of the Texas Republic. The first non-Indian settlement was in the 1840s, as the failed Bird’s Fort and eventually became the site of Texas Ranger Post, Johnson Station. The city was authorized by Republic President Sam Houston to serve as a dividing line between settlers and displaced Indian tribes of Cherokee, Delaware, Biloxi, Caddo, Keechie and Waco representatives. It was at Bird's Fort that the Republic of Texas signed it's first ever peace treaty with Indian tribes. Arlington Texas has gone through much in the past 150 years! This great city has everything from a college town to a site of Indian battles, horse racing and even a gambling mecca.
